Ireland – A Great Holiday Destination

Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle and once you get there, you’ll see why. It is a country covered with verdant pastures, lush vegetation, and gentle rolling hills. Ireland is a jewel in the North Atlantic. It is a country that mixes ancient castles and a rich history with modern sophistication. From Dublin to Belfast, to Limerick and Galway, Ireland has a wealth of things to do and see.

When planning your trip, first decide where you want to go. Major airports are Dublin, Shannon, Ireland West and Belfast International. There are many package deals available which will allow you to book your flight and accommodations together. That can be a big savings. Hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, even castles offer great accommodations at affordable prices.

If one is adventurous, book a stay at Leap Castle which is reportedly the most haunted castle in Ireland. Other castles that are now hotels with state-of-the-art amenities are Dromoland Castle, Castle Leslie and Ashford Castle.

There are self-drive tours, but remember when hiring a car the Irish drive on the left side of the road, which can be confusing to many. Also, when renting a car, keep in mind that most cars are manual transmission (stick shift) and automatic transmission cars will cost more. If one is afraid to drive, there are many coach tours available.

Popular places to go are Bunratty Castle, Rock of Cashel, the Cliffs of Moher, Holy Cross Abbey and Blarney Castle, the home of the Blarney Stone. Kiss the stone and receive the gift of eloquence.

All across Ireland there are a plethora of pubs and restaurants. In Dublin pay a visit to Guinness Steak House, home of Guinness stout whiskey. Another of Dublin’s famous pubs is O’Neill’s which has been serving travelers for 300 years. Or, mingle with the locals at any of the neighborhood pubs. There are restaurants for every taste. Also, be sure to take in one of the many farmers markets to taste all the flavors of Ireland.

For the golfer, there are many courses to choose from. Some are Old Head Golf Links, Faithlegg House Hotel and Golf Club and Millicent Golf and Country Club, just to name a few.

Whether one loves delving into history, playing golf, touring the stately homes and castles, shopping or the rich culture of Ireland, the visitor to this beautiful country will want to return again and again.
